We chose the KKK and the background of how they became s our research topic. This was because it related to the theme of the National History Day project. We also chose it because it was a great, yet terrifying moment in American history before the civil war and affected our society today. The Ku Klux Klan also fascinated us because we knew that even after the Civil War ended, blacks still faced the segregation and racism.
We conducted our research using many different types of sources. We used many internet sites, as well as books and encyclopedias. When researching, we tried to get as many primary sources as possible, as well as information that occurred before, during, and after the Civil War. Useful sources that helped us was the Encyclopedia on the Ku Klux Klan, and as well as the comic.
For our project, we chose to do a website. We chose this format because the information would not be easily acted out in a performance and could be shown easily through pictures, graphs, and visuals. We could have a timeline that showed important events affiliated with the Ku Klux Klan and have links and pictures. We would make it by taking the website sources we found and creating hyperlinks to the sources. We could also have videos that we found helpful to go under the information that we found.
This topic relates to the National History Day theme of reaction, reform, or revolution because out of these it shows reaction. the reaction was that white southerners were angry about losing the Civil War and their right to own slaves. They formed a group, the Ku Klux Klan, focused on white supremacy. This group reacted by performing hate crimes on blacks and other races and religions and anyone who supported civil rights. The reaction crated chaos and fear, particulary in the southern states through blacks and other people.
